Racing the final day of the U.S. Offshore Championship, sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek Vineyard, was tight and exciting in winds of 9 to 14 knots. After an early delay to repair a broken jib halyard, the Race Committee got in three windward-leeward races to complete the series. Due to a boat problem, Chuck Nichols' team from San Diego Yacht Club had been awarded average points for the first three races that would be based on their results in the remaining buoy races. |

The racing was a battle between Rick Strilky's team from Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club and Nichols' team, who are the defending champions. Strilky's team had two firsts to the Nichols' team one. With one race to go Strilky appeared to have the series wrapped up since the Nichols' team had taken a sixth in the first race on Sunday; however, Strilky had to take a turns penalty after an incident at the first weather mark rounding in the last race and then their spinnaker ripped when re-hoisting to continue down the course. They quickly went to their spare spinnaker but trailed the fleet at the leeward mark rounding. Picking shifts in the puffy northeasterly, they worked back up to sixth at the second weather mark rounding, then surfed into third with four boats abreast of each other at the finish line. The team from Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club took home the championship. Columbia Yacht Club then hosted the awards party where the winners were awarded their medals.
