US SAILING

Full Report - Day 4

Monday, June 30

San Francisco bay saw sunny skies earlier in the morning than yesterday and the wind piped up pretty quickly.  As a result, the breeze in today’s first race was 18+ knots.  The top three in each class were handed leader pinneys to for the day: 1st place wore yellow, second place blue and third place red.  They leaders were pretty excited and looked very sharp, until we told them they had to be handed back at the end of the day.  One competitor said, “What happens if a seal comes and eats it?”  You just have to smile!

The C420’s and Laser Full and Radial rigs left the docks on time and had a brisk sail out to the race course.  The faster 29ers, with the collaboration of the PRO Jeff Zarwell and coach Molly Carapiet, moved to postpone for one hour to “wait for the wind.”  Yes, to wait for the wind to build….Well, they got their wish.

All fleets started fairly soon after getting out to the circle.  PRO Bartz Schneider wanted to keep things moving and not have a fleet wait for too much time, so he sped up the time in between starts, keeping the racing going.  Each fleet had about a 10 minute gap.  With the way the trap course was set up, it all worked well.

By the time race one was over, the winds had reached the 20+ knots level and boats were starting to flip with regularity.  The 29er’s saw some action in the big breeze, big sloopy chop and current, especially at one particular leeward mark rounding where the first and second place boats flipped and the third place boat caught up just in time to have a three way duel upwind.

The racing at the top is very close; today’s preliminary finishes are below.  After 6 races in C420s, Lasers and Radials, and 8 in 29ers, including a throw-out, the standings are:
