Day One

The first day of the 2008 Disabled Sailing Championship at the American Yacht Club in Rye, New York, started with a clinic for the sailors and much anticipation and hopes for good wind and great competition on Long Island Sound starting tomorrow.

A team of volunteers from Larchmont Yacht Club worked to custom-fit eight Ideal 18 boats with temporary seats to support the crew. For several of those sailors, it will be the first time to race in that class. Sailors will also compete in the Sonar and 2.4mR classes.

The day started off with a cool drizzle, but heat and humidity built throughout the day. For much of the day, the wind remained elusive. Coaches Amanda Callahan, Marko Dahlberg, and Betsy Alison, coach of the U.S. Disabled Sailing Team, gave a brief introduction on the dock before the boats were readied and launched in the early afternoon.

Their return to shore was followed by a chalk talk led by Alison, five-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.

As the sun went down, the sailors gathered on the lawn for cocktails and a barbecue. They were joined by American Yacht Club members returning from the weekly Friday night Sunset Series.

Spirits are high in anticipation of three days of good racing.
