Day Three
| American Yacht Club laid on a big
shore-side welcome for the disabled fleet as the sailors came off the
water after the first day’s racing. A get-together on the lawn drove
everyone into the club bar as a thunder squall whipped across the harbor.
But as you might expect the party continued for a number of hours
– for some into the
wee hours. So, when Day 2 of the U.S. Disabled Sailing Championship dawned like the first - hot and without wind – more than a few were hoping that there would be another lengthy delay. It was not to be however. The shore thermal began to fill and PRO Tinker Myles declared that the race committee planned to start on time. And so began a contest between the shore thermal, the sea breeze and a line of thunder squalls. The result: three races in shifty conditions for the competitors and innumerable mark changes for the hard working RC. Judges Hugh Elliot, Mary Savage, Tim Putnam and Noel Field had a light day with only one protest. After 6 races, Sarah Everhart Skeels holds a 1-point lead in the hotly-contested Ideal 18 class. In the 2.4 meters, after 7 races, Canadian Bruce Millar is stealing the show with 14-point lead over Mark LeBlanc. And in the closely matched Sonars, Rick Doerr retains a 2-point over Paul Callahan.
