The event opened with a pre-race clinic led by incoming J22 USA Class Association President Kelson Elam. The clinic covered the specific traits and sail trim characteristics of the J22.
After the clinic race officials moved the competitors onto the lake for a practice races and opportunity familiarize themselves with the race area and boats. A practice race was held so all competitors would be familiar with starts, marks and race format. The competitors sailed in cool weather and light air for several hours before retuning to boat club for evening events.
This is the 14th national regatta held by the Oklahoma City Boat club and regatta co-chairs Justin Howard and Linda Bays are putting together a top event according to race management consultant Brad Davis. Principle Race Officer Mike Anderson plans to complete eleven races in the next four days. Excellent weather is predicted for the regatta with temperatures in the 70’s and winds of 10 – 12. Representing US SAILING at the event is the current chair of the U.S. Women's Sailing Championship Committee, Betsy Beddow. She welcomed all the competitors and wished them good luck during the next four days of races. |
