US SAILING

Full Report - Day 2

Weather Conditions

Saturday, June 28
Today was the final day of the clinic and the practice race for the 2008 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship. Once again the fleets were broken down by the US SAILING coaches, John Vandemoer, Bern Noack, Brett Davis, John Pierce, and Molly Carapiet.

Conditions were considerably lighter this morning and while some of the fleet opted to stay on shore and work on their boats, most went out onto the Bay mid-morning. Today's conditions were lighter and the seas smoother.  The 29er, C420 and Laser fleets went out on the course, while the Radial fleet stayed in by Angel Island, where the winds were lighter.

But tomorrow the sailors will be racing on the other side of Angel Island, where the winds are expected to be stronger and they are prepared to work hard.  The forecast is for the breeze to build throughout the day. For the sailors who will be representing the United States at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Denmark next month this championship is one of their last opportunities to tune up before they leave.

Coaches have emphasized how understanding and using the tides and currents to their advantage will play into the sailors' strategies.  After dinner, the sailors went over to hear an lecture on San Francisco Bay by Kame Richards.  Using satellite images and projections, the sailors learned what the currents will be in the area throughout the regatta with special focus on the racing area.  Then, it was back to their hosts for a good night's sleep.

Individual race results will  be found at www.usyouthchamps.com.
