Disabled Sailors to Compete
in Qingdao International Regatta
Ten members of the US Disabled Sailing Team AlphaGraphics have landed in Qingdao, China, and are preparing for five days of racing at the International Association For Disabled Sailing (IFDS) Qingdao International Regatta. The U.S. has sent five of its top-ranked teams to this May 11-15 event: in the Sonar, the Paralympic team of Rick Doerr (Clifton, NJ), Tim Angle (Marblehead, MA), and Bill Donohue (Brick, NJ) will race, as well as the second-ranked team led by Paul Callahan (Providence, RI) with Mike Hersey (Hyannis, MA) and Roger Cleworth (Lithia, FL) as crew. In the SKUD 18, Scott Whitman (Brick, NJ) and Julia Dorsett (Westchester, PA) will represent the United States, as the Paralympic team of Nick Scandone (Newport Beach, CA) and Maureen McKinnon-Tucker (Marblehead, MA) will not attend due to scheduling conflicts. Competing in the 2.4mR are John Ruf (Pewaukee, WI) and Mark LeBlanc (New Orleans, LA), ranked first and second respectively. US Disabled Sailing Team AlphaGraphics members who sit first in the rankings have qualified to compete in the Paralympic Games in September, also in Qingdao, China.

Although it is not an official test event, the IFDS Qingdao International Regatta will serve as the most realistic training the teams and the organizers will see before the Paralympic Games in the fall. Head Coach Betsy Alison (Newport, RI) says in an email from China, "There is no substitute for practicing at the venue in preparation for the big show."

US SAILOR of The Week - Franny Charles
Franny Charles is sailing through life. Sailing ever since he can remember, he naturally joined the sailing team after he was accepted to Tufts University in Medford, MA. Since then, his main boats of choice have been 110s, 210s and Stars. Seventeen years ago, he found the perfect vessel to share his passion for sailing as Sailing Master of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Nautical Association (MITNA). His favorite part of the job is "working with very smart people who never stop asking questions. Students always want to learn more." His passion is clearly contagious...

US SAILING Provides More Tools Online
The book of US SAILING Appeals and ISAF Cases is now available online free to members in US SAILING's ongoing effort to provide more publications online. The Appeals are decisions of the US SAILING Appeals Committee, and the Cases are decisions of national authorities from around the world published by the International Sailing Federation. The Index is sorted by rule number so if you're in a protest involving rule 17.1 (proper course), you can quickly scan through each appeal pertaining to rule 17.1 to see if one applies to your situation. Most Appeals and Cases are very brief with a clear explanation of the Facts and often a diagram, followed by a clear interpretation and application of the rules to those Facts.
