Leading the sport of sailing for 111 years

WayzataCSC4bNational Safe Boating Week Starts This Weekend - May 17-23

As we are about to get into the height of the summer sailing season, boating organizations nationwide are celebrating National Safe Boating Week from May 17-23. Why not celebrate by making sure you wear your life jacket at all times while sailing, and asking your friends and family to do the same?

According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, most boating fatalities are caused by drownings - and 90 percent of those who drown while boating are not wearing a life jacket. While statistics prove that the number of adult sailors who wear life jackets has more than doubled in the last 10 years, it is still important for all sailors to ensure that everyone onboard wears their life jacket.

"If you think about it, a modern life jacket is a lot less restrictive than the automobile lap and shoulder belt most of us wear without a second thought," says Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, an umbrella group representing boating safety advocates throughout North America.  "After a few minutes you forget you're wearing one," adds Chambers.  "But if you happen to be involved in a boating accident, you'll be very glad it's on."

US SAILOR of The Week - Rachel Lounsbury
Fifteen-year-old Rachel Lounsbury of Stuart, Florida recently qualified for the National Opti Team after finishing 28th overall at the team's qualifying event, the seventh girl of 195 competitors. What is most remarkable about this achievement is the significant challenge she overcame to get to the starting line. Rachel was born with a heart defect which required open heart surgery at the age of nine and had not been successful at other sports prior to the surgery. Her best finish (ninth) in the last race of the regatta is typical of the determination and drive that her parents credit to her involvement with the sport of sailing...

2008 Olympic Games Countdown
August 8 - 28

86 Days Until Opening Ceremonies

U.S. Olympic Team Profile
49er -- Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast

49er skipper Tim Wadlow returns in 2008 for his second Olympic regatta. Onboard his 49er will be new crew Chris Rast, a veteran who has skippered two Olympic regattas and coached one. While the recipe of personalities will be different onboard, Wadlow still considers the 2004 Games the foundation of a longer experiment.

"Every campaign is different," says Wadlow, "but I think your first Olympics is an eye-opening experience ... Coming back the second time, there are a lot of things I'll do differently for a better finish. We were proud of our fifth place last time, so the motivation for this campaign is to better that finish."
