FRIDAY RACES CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF WIND; SAILROS ADVANCE TO MEDAL RACES AT PAN AM GAMES

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (July 27, 2007) – All sailing races were cancelled today due to lack of wind at the XV Pan American Games, so the teams currently in the top five positions in each class will advance to Saturday’s final Medal Races. All nine U.S. teams remain among the top five heading into the Medal Races. Six classes – RS:X Men, RS:X Women, Hobie Cat 16, Laser, Laser Radial, and Sunfish – have only finished eight races this week. The Snipe, J24 and Lightning participated in seven races, due to the cancellations today.

Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) has dominated the Laser class throughout the week and heads into the Medal Races three points ahead of Brazil's Robert Scheidt. Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) hovers only two points behind the current leader of the Laser Radial fleet, Mexico's Tania Elias Calles Wolf.

The Lightning team of David Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.), Bill Faude (Chicago, Ill.) and Jody Starck (Buffalo, N.Y.) sits in third place and only three points behind the leader, Chile. Paul Forester (Rockwall, Texas) will also enter the Medal Races in third place in the Sunfish class.

The Snipe duo of Augie Diaz (Miami, Fla.) and Tracy Smith (Newport, R.I.) are currently in fourth place, while the RS:X Men, RS:X Women, J24 and Hobie teams   are all in fifth place heading into the final races. Medal Races begin at 12 p.m. local on Saturday.

The XV Pan American Games feature 5,654 athletes from 42 nations competing in 37 sports. The sailing competition is taking place at the Glória Marina in the Guanabara Bay. The Pan American Games are held every four years, historically one year before the Olympic Games. The first Pan American Games were held in 1951 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
