US SAILING

US SAILING Sailor Athlete Council

US SAILING, the National Governing Body of sailing, has established the Sailor Athlete Council, SAC. The mission of the SAC is to maintain an avenue for sailor athletes in US SAILING to voice their opinions, and to provide a forum and opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the future and direction of our sport.

NOTE (May 7, 2007): this site is in the middle of a renovation, links may be breaking and getting restored.  Your patience is appreciated.  Please forward comments to the SAC web liaison Sandy Grosvenor at sandy@gromurph.org

SAILOR ATHLETE COUNCIL 2006 ELECTION RESULTS:
NINE COUNCIL MEMBERS ELECTED

From Olympians to US Sailing Team members and national champions, the new members of the Sailor Athlete Council have been elected by sailor athletes from across the country. The new Council members elected for a 4-year term are: Dave Perry (Southport, CT), Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, FL), Brian Ledbetter (Seattle, WA), Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI), Jesse Falsone (Edgewater, MD), Ned Jones (Newport, RI), and Dobbs Davis (Annapolis, MD). In addition, 2 Council members were re-elected: Dean Brenner and Cory Sertl.

These newly-elected members will join Bob Billingham (chair), Sandy Grosvenor (vice chair), Kim Hapgood, John Lovell and Hannah Swett who all have two years remaining of their terms.

SAC holds meeting twice a year (October & March) in conjunction with the US SAILING Meetings. The meetings are open to the public and anyone interested is invited to attend. The elected members of SAC are your representatives at US SAILING. If there is a racing-related issue within our sport, and you want your voice within US SAILING, speak to a member of the Sailor Athlete Council.

The U. S. Olympic Committee and the Amateur Sports Act have mandated that each of the Olympic sports must have twenty percent athlete representation on the Board of Directors and certain designated committees, which make up that sport's national governing body.

The SAC, while created due to an Olympic Committee mandate, has been established to represent all of the active racing community. Elections are held every two years to determine the council members.

All US SAILING members designated as sailor athletes are encouraged to vote. The council is comprised of sailors who meet the definition of an A Level or B Level Sailor-Athlete.
