PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN (30 March, 2023) – Almost 1,000 boats and just under 1,300 athletes from 67 countries will take to the water from April 3-8 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, for the highest attended Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca Regatta in its 52-year history. Eighteen US Sailing Team athletes and twenty-three additional USA representatives across all 10 Olympic classes are making their final preparations on the shores of the Bay of Palma.
Princess Sofía marks the official European season opener with all 10 Olympic classes in attendance. While not a country qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, USA will use the Princess Sofía and French Olympic Week regattas as 49er FX and Nacra 17 selection events for the 2023 Olympic Test Event and Pan Am Games. The top boat after these two events will sail the Olympic Test Event and Pan Am Games and have a chance at early selection for a Paris 2024 Olympics nomination. US teams can achieve early selection by qualifying for and subsequently finishing on the podium at the 2023 Olympic Test Event.
“This is a really key event to assess where I am relative to the fleet after winter training,” said Daniela Moroz, winner of the 2022 Trofeo Princess Sofía in the Women’s Formula Kite. “It’s a great opportunity to learn what I might need to work on to be as prepared as possible for the Olympic Test Event and Worlds this summer. I’m definitely looking to get some solid, consistent results on the board and perform my best in preparation for the summer. It’s very much a process event for me, but I’m still practicing the mental and physical routines I would use at a peak regatta to be able to deliver a high-level result.”
“Our goal of bringing home Olympic medals remains the same, and the staff is working hard every day to support the athletes on their path to Paris,” said Sally Barkow, US Olympic Sailing Head of Operations. “There have been athletes on the ground as early as a month in advance, studying the complexities of the venue and logging the hours on the water to get as comfortable as possible. We have physical therapy, technology, meteorology, and racing rules support for the Team in Palma and we’re looking forward to watching them give it their all starting April 3rd.”
