BRISTOL, RI (January 18, 2024) – Do you want $5,000 to travel the country with your friends to match race? Are you a US-based sailor between the ages of 19 and 29? Then consider applying to the David Storrs US sailing match racing grant program.
The grant program provides reimbursement up to $5,000 per team to pay for expenses such as entry fees, travel expenses, and lodging for one full calendar year. Two skipper-led teams will be selected for the grant, one female and one male. Recipients are encouraged to attend at least 4 events. Applications close April 1.
In addition to financial support, the grant program provides a mentor who will be available to share veteran advice and ensure a successful match racing campaign. The mentor will give advice on regatta selection, racing tips, and a whiteboard session with long-term goal setting for the team. Mentors have many years of experience, national championships, grand slams, and numerous graded events to their name.
“Having access to mentors that we could reach out and ask any questions to was an amazing resource,” 2022 grant recipient Patrick Shanahan. “The mentors helped us navigate the match racing realm which can seem daunting to a team with not a lot of match racing experience.” Mentors are highly skilled match racers, such as #1 world ranked match racer and 2023 mentor, Chris Poole. Chris was vital for 2023 grant recipient Cormac Murphy who found solace in “the opportunity to be mentored by someone with as much experience as Chris.”
