Making Waves and Building Community in Jensen Beach, FL
Nestled along the picturesque shores of Indian River Drive in Jensen Beach, Florida, the US Sailing Center – Martin County (USSCMC) stands as a beacon of accessibility, community engagement, and the joy of sailing. Since its founding in 1992, USSCMC has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving community sailing center dedicated to providing opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
USSCMC just hosted the 2024 US Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and brought together over 400 young sailors, ages 8 to 19, for an exciting weekend of racing in the Optimist and Club 420 classes. Part of a nationwide series aimed at fostering a lifelong passion for sailing, the event highlighted skill development, sportsmanship, and a love for the water.
A Rich History Rooted in the Local Community
Established by a group of passionate sailors on the Treasure Coast, USSCMC began with little more than a tent, a camper, and a few donated boats. Over the years, it has evolved into a modern, two-story facility with expansive water views and a diverse fleet of boats, including Optis, Lasers, Flying Scots, Hobie Catamarans, and more. This evolution reflects the center’s commitment to serving the local community through education, competition, and outreach.
“US Sailing Center – Martin County is a unique community center that provides many opportunities for youth programs and adult membership programs that enrich sailors and love for the water. We host major regatta events that continue to support the local community and local businesses and provide amazing competitive racing,” says Adam Gee, Executive Director of USSCMC.
Programs for All Ages and Abilities
USSCMC’s programs are designed to make sailing accessible and enjoyable for everyone, from young children to adults. The center offers a variety of programs, including:
- Success Sailing: A unified approach to teaching sailing to athletes with intellectual disabilities, fostering self-confidence and a love for the sport.
- Adventure Sailing: Fun and exploratory sailing experiences for youth and adults.
- High School Sailing: Competitive sailing opportunities for local students.
- Race Team Sailing: Training and competitive experiences for budding racers.
- Homeschool Sailing: A unique way for homeschoolers to experience sailing and the outdoors.
- C420 Race Team Sailing: Focused coaching and racing for those interested in doublehanded sailing.
These programs not only teach sailing skills but also emphasize teamwork, confidence, and personal growth.
Community Outreach Initiatives
USSCMC’s commitment to inclusivity shines through its outreach efforts, which ensure that sailing is accessible to underrepresented groups in the community. Notable initiatives include:
- Hibiscus Sailing: In partnership with the Hibiscus Children’s Center, this program offers children in difficult situations a chance to experience the joy and confidence that sailing brings.
- Operation 300: Serving Gold Star Families, this initiative provides adventure camps for children who have lost a parent to military service, including sailing experiences guided by veterans.
- Success Sailing: Designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities, this program fosters a sense of accomplishment and fun on the water.
Through these initiatives, USSCMC creates smiles, builds character, and nurtures self-confidence among participants.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Ensuring a welcoming environment for all is a priority at USSCMC. Staff and instructors participate in monthly coaching courses focused on DEI principles, led by the Executive Director and guest speakers. This ongoing training helps the center maintain an inclusive culture and continually improve its programs.
Facilities and Regattas
The center’s state-of-the-art facilities and diverse fleet enable it to host large-scale national regattas, attracting elite sailors and boosting the local economy. These events not only foster competitive excellence but also create lasting connections within the sailing community.
Supporting the Future of Sailing
USSCMC’s ability to offer scholarships and subsidized programs ensures that cost is never a barrier to participation. Donations play a crucial role in sustaining these efforts. To support their mission and help keep sailing accessible, visit USSCMC Donations.
