Gibbs and Weis Take Gold at Pre-Worlds

Riley Gibbs and Anna Weis, winners of the 2020 Nacra 17 Oceania Championships

The U.S. has a lot to celebrate and look forward to before the 2020 Nacra 17, 49er, and 49erFX World Championships start next week.

Riley Gibbs (Long Beach, Calif.) and Anna Weis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) used superior upwind boat speed to win the 2020 Oceania Championship. On a blustery final day, the American pair finished the day’s races in first and third and won the regatta by three points.

While Gibbs and Weis claimed the Gold Medal in the Nacra fleet, Paris Henken and Anna Tobias also performed impressively and took fourth in the 49erFX fleet. On Monday, February 10, the Nacra 17, 49er, and 49erFX classes will host the 2020 World Championship in Geelong, AUS.

Gibbs and Weis are pleased to kick off 2020 on a strong note, especially heading into next week. “We are pumped to see our hard work in training pay off,” said Weis. “This regatta acts as a pre-Worlds warmup before the World Championships start on February 10-15. Right now, we are doing the final preparations before we start racing again and have our eyes forward on the next regatta.”
