The 2022 Youth Match Racing World Championship was sailed in Pornichet, France, July 19-23, in J/80’s with asymmetrical spinnakers. Twelve teams from around the world, including Australia and New Zealand, battled for five days in all breezes. The winning US team from the Balboa YC in Newport Beach, CA, finished third in the Round Robin. Their toughest stage came next as they faced a strong Italian team, winning the Quarterfinals in five races, 3-2. Next came the French team in the Semifinals. After losing the first race, Petersen’s team found their form and not only won the next three, they ran the table 3-0 in the Finals against a strong Swedish team.
The US team win continues a very positive run for US youth match racers. In 2020, Jack Parkin’s team won the Silver Medal at the Worlds, followed by David Woods’ team who won the World Championship in 2021. The Petersen team continues the success of the US youth sailors in recent years with their win in 2022.
