SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (June 19, 2016) – Sunday’s U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship finale featured the conclusion of the Semifinal rounds, the Final Series and the Petit Finals. Teams racing in Elliott 6m sailboats were graced with outstanding conditions for the second consecutive day on Lake Michigan. This US Sailing National Championship was hosted by Sail Sheboygan and the Sheboygan Yacht Club.
The winner of the Rose Cup was determined in the last race of the Finals in a first to three points series. With the series even at 2-2, #2 seed Romain Screve (Ross, Calif./San Franciso Yacht Club/St. Francis Yacht Club), Jackson Ritter (San Francisco, Calif.) and Sammy Shea (San Francisco, Calif.) edged #1 seed Sean Cornell (Centerport, NY/Centerport Yacht Club/Zentor Racing), Thomas Pluchino (Centerport, NY) and Scott Ewing (Miami, Fla.) to win the championship.
The win earned Screve an invitation to the 2016 Governor’s Cup on July 18-23 at the Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, California. Screve also qualifies for the 2016 Oakcliff Halloween Invitational on October 29-30 in Match 40s.
Results & Racing – Results & Standings
- Final Series: Screve won races 1, 3 and 5 in the Final Series against Cornell to win the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup (Note – Cornell defeated Screve in their Round Robin match on Friday). Screve’s crewmate Shea earned his second Rose Cup title. He won his first as crew for Scott Buckstaff in 2013.
- Petit Finals for third place: The team of Jack Parkin (Riverside, Conn./Riverside Yacht Club), Wiley Rogers (Kemah, Calif.) and Bram Brakman (Darien, Conn.) defeated Dane Byerly (El Lago, Texas/Lakewood Yacht Club), Laura Masterson (League City, Texas) and Christopher Chaumont (Fort Worth, Texas), 2-0.
- Semifinals: #1 Cornell defeated #4 Parkin, 3-0; #2 Screve defeated #3 Byerly, 3-1.
- Quarterfinals: #1 Cornell and #2 Screve each swept their matches, 3-0; #3 Byerly and #4 Parkin advanced on their final race of the series to win their matches, 3-2.
- Round Robin: Cornell finished the stage as the #1 seed with eight points in nine races; Screve was also 8-1 in the stage, with his lone loss coming to Cornell; the top eight teams advanced to the Quarterfinals.
