Spotlight on Team Paradise Sailing: A Beacon of Inclusivity and Empowerment on Biscayne Bay

Nestled in the heart of Coconut Grove, Team Paradise Sailing, Inc. is much more than a typical sailing program. Founded in 2000 by Olympic Gold Medalist in the Star class, Magnus Liljedahl, this 501(c)(3) organization serves as a lifeline to many who might otherwise never experience the joys of sailing. Team Paradise is both a US Sailing Accredited Keelboat School and an Accredited Community Sailing Center, deepening their commitment to being a nationally recognized organization.

Through adaptive and inclusive programming, Team Paradise is fulfilling its mission of changing lives by providing recreational, educational, and healing opportunities to individuals with disabilities, underserved youth, veterans, and others in need of support. From youth STEM activities and sailing to therapeutic programs for veterans, this community sailing center ensures that Biscayne Bay is accessible to all.

Team Paradise is proud to offer a variety of programs that cater to individuals from all walks of life, with a particular focus on those who are often underrepresented in the sport of sailing. For example, 70% of their youth sailors receive scholarships, while the veterans’ sailing program is fully subsidized.

The center offers a unique “Sailing+Youth+STEM” program that combines sailing education with STEM learning, giving youth from the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department and foster care the opportunity to build critical life skills. The program partners with local organizations such as Genesis Hopeful Haven and Healthy Little Havana to reach as many underserved children as possible.

In addition to its youth programming, Team Paradise has become a beacon of hope for veterans dealing with physical and psychological disabilities. Every Thursday, veterans referred by the Miami VA Hospital participate in therapeutic sailing, providing them with a safe and calming environment that promotes mental and emotional well-being.

One participant, Guy Segal, captured the essence of the program when he shared, “The only time that I’m not worried about someone sneaking up from behind is when I’m out sailing. I’m now completely relaxed, and I love it.” These moments of healing are at the heart of what Team Paradise stands for—giving individuals the opportunity to experience peace and connection through the power of sailing.

The center’s commitment to inclusivity extends to adults as well, offering US Sailing-accredited adult sailing instruction, private excursions, and corporate team-building regattas. These programs are not only a source of revenue for the organization but also a critical way to subsidize their scholarships and community outreach. Through partnerships with the City of Miami and other local organizations, Team Paradise ensures that sailing is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or financial status.

Team Paradise continues to look toward the future with the goal of expanding its impact even further. With an ongoing need for additional boats, equipment, and program support, the organization is actively fundraising through initiatives like the annual “Give Miami Day” digital campaign, where donations are matched by The Miami Foundation. For those who wish to support this incredible community resource, donations can be made through their website, ensuring that Team Paradise can continue its mission of providing life-changing experiences on Biscayne Bay.
