U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship Day 1 Recap

The first day of racing has wrapped up in Marblehead at the USYMRC, hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club. After two days of practice and clinics coached by Dave Perry and Janel Zarkowsky Martin, competitors were eager to test their skills on the racecourse for fierce competition.

“Racing started today on time with a chilly Northwesterly,” recapped Martin. “The Race Committee team ran the first flights close to the mooring field until the breeze died and shifted to the sea breeze direction. With this new breeze direction, the entire regatta moved farther away, just past Children’s Island. The racing had champagne conditions, with 8-12 knots of breeze and small chop from the changing tide.
The Race Committee completed Flight 9 of the round robin before sending competitors back to Corinthian Yacht Club.”

“The results are close with no team undefeated,” she pointed out. “The hard work from Wednesday and Thursday’s clinic showed today with precise boat and sail handling around marks and execution of playbook moves in the pre-start to keep control.”

The forecast has improved for the weekend and the format allows for all competitors to keep sailing through tomorrow.

“Today we had a really pristine day on the water,” said Rose Cup competitor and local sailor, Pearse Dowd. “In Marblehead, this is kind of the best conditions you can get. We’re supposed to have more of this for the next few days and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Following today’s racing, competitors were treated to a taco dinner and debrief with video footage from Perry and Zarkowsky to break down the day and recap umpire calls made on the water.
