US Sailing Offshore Office Prepares for Centennial Bayview Mackinac Race

The 100th Bayview Mackinac Race, the world’s longest continuously run long distance freshwater yacht race, promises to be a landmark event and the US Sailing Offshore Office has been busier than ever, issuing all ratings for American boats in the race. Central to the fairness and competitiveness of the race is the ORC (Offshore Racing Congress) rating system. The ORC provides a scientific and impartial way to rate a diverse range of boats, ensuring that each vessel has an equal chance to win. The system considers various boat measurements and performance potential, offering a level playing field where both high-tech and traditional boats can compete on equal terms.

This year to celebrate the 100th anniversary, the race returns to its roots on the original course with all competitors navigating the historic Shore Course instead of the Cove Course. Starting on July 20, 2024, the fleet will embark on a 204-mile journey from Port Huron, Michigan, to Mackinac Island, hugging the scenic Michigan shoreline before turning west and finishing between Round Island and Mackinac Island.

Record Participation

The 2024 race has already set a record with over 325 entries, surpassing the previous high of 316 in 1985. This surge in participation highlights the enduring appeal of the race and the growing interest in sailing as an outdoor activity. From seasoned sailors to newcomers, this race offers a unique challenge and a chance to be part of sailing history.

The ORC Rating System

Central to the fairness and competitiveness of the race is the ORC rating system. The ORC provides a scientific and impartial way to rate a diverse range of boats, ensuring that each vessel has an equal chance to win. The system considers various boat measurements and performance potential, offering a level playing field where both high-tech and traditional boats can compete on equal terms.

The US Sailing Offshore Office worked closely this season with the Bayview Mackinac Race Committee to ensure all boats were accurately rated. At the start of the 2024 season, the Offshore Office implemented a new request management and application system that allowed the team to work quickly and efficiently when issuing certificates. Daily, the offshore team would communicate with boat owners, sail makers, and race officials to ensure all data was submitted, boats were accurately represented, and each boat was rated in time for the race.

56 new boats entered the ORC system for the race this year, through certification from the Offshore Office. The team developed updated scratch sheet tools to communicate in real time with the race committee on the status of all boats obtaining a rating certificate. Preparations were underway in February, when the Offshore Office went to Bayview as part of the US Sailing Roadshow to meet with sailors and discuss getting rated before the Bayview to Mackinac Race.

The new certification includes an offset file, providing a 3D rendering of the hull of the boat, including variations in hull and keel designs from the manufacturer. Obtaining this certification is a personalized process, involving detailed communication between the boat owner and the Offshore Office, ensuring an accurate and equitable rating is issued.

Historic Course and Celebrations

This year’s race will exclusively use the Shore Course, reminiscent of the original route from 1925. The course starts at southern Lake Huron, passes south of Bois Blanc Island, and finishes at Mackinac Island. This decision to revert to the Shore Course aligns with the race’s centennial celebration, paying homage to the event’s rich history. The race will conclude with jubilant celebrations on Mackinac Island, featuring awards and festivities that bring together the sailing community.

“The US Sailing Offshore Office would like to congratulate Bayview Yacht Club and the many sailors that participated in this event, and any historical Bayview Mackinac Race,” shared Sydney Hough, Junior Ratings Officer at US Sailing. “It is remarkable and inspiring to see such a monumental race continue for so many years!”

With the combination of historical significance, a record-breaking number of participants, and the equitable ORC rating system, the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to be a memorable event, celebrating a century of sailing excellence and camaraderie.
