About Town Class
The boat is lapstrake, 16 1/2 feet, designed for kids to learn to sail in a safe boat. She has a main and jib, no spinnaker. The boats are built by Pert Lowell Company in Newbury, Massachusetts and the same family business is still in operation today. In 1935 a fleet was established in Marblehead, Massachusetts and has been racing there ever since. Other fleets have come and gone. There are currently fleets in Nahant, Massachusetts and Touisset Point Rhode Island. The Marblehad fleet is alive and well, racing 4 days a week, providing fun for families and kids, with 41 active current owners.
